Watermelon Jubilee

I love watermelon.

This weekend is the Watermelon Jubilee in Greenville, Alabama.

ALL THE FREE SLICES OF WATERMELON YOU CAN EAT!!!!!!!!!!!

Three dollars is almost free, but that is with or without the wonderful summertime treat, hopefully served ice cold (fully charged would work, also).

If you really want to appreciate this beloved southern goody, which originated from southern Africa, read The Watermelon King by Daniel Wallace, best known for his 1998 novel Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions. This novel contains all the negative nuances known in the small towns of Alabama (or any backwoods place), racism, narrow-mindedness, and a bizarre, shocking revelation which won't surprise the "country folk" who grew up in this kind of outrageous environment. Heartbreaking, Provocative, and Inventive.

Mmm. . . Watermelon.

I have a seedless that I need to cut up. I always make a mess. I need a cutting board outside.

Thanks for dropping by the new place.. ;-)

I'm not sure I like wordpress though. I was just curious about it.

Hope you had a great weekend!

I used to love watermelon. Until I grew it in my garden one summer, and ended up deluged by watermelons. A watermelon per day makes you tired of watermelon!

Give me chilled watermelon and a shaker of salt and I'm a happy person. I was munching on watermelon this weekend too.

Mad - The author grew up here locally, and you can see how it influenced his writing.

Nancy BEE - No, I don't think I know any watermelon songs.

Pam - Go get some. I'm sure your girls can help you consume it.

Evil Spock - Being messy is part of the fun of watermelon.

Nancy - If you're used to blogger, wordpress has some limitations, but they make it up with their reliability.

BT - I used to hate cantalope, now I love it, and watermelon keeps getting better and better.

PoP - MMMMMMMMMM

Nancy - I can bring beer, and more wine for you. Ever had watermelon wine?

supergirlest - strawberry jam has the same effect on me (makes me gag), but I love strawberries.

I LOVE watermelon. In fact I think I am addicted to it. I eat a 1/2 a day. I always have some cut up in the fridge.

Did you ever read Louisiana Power and Light? Set in my hometown.

There's something weird about reading books set in your hometown, isn't there?

I love watermelon too. Whatever happened to the kind with the big seeds? It's disappeared from the market. I swear it tasted sweeter than this tiny seed variety.
